Sandwich

Sandwich and Co

Just a five-minute stroll from our front door, Sandwich and Co is where we head when the day calls for a lunch that is substantial but won't leave you in a food coma. We love their clever

hybrid of coastal classics and Japanese-inflected builds, ranging from Teriyaki Tofu and Chicken to a Prawn Ricotta stack. The portions are notoriously generous (bring your appetite), and the matcha is some of the best around.

Try: The BLT: bacon, crunchy lettuce and tomato with tasty cheddar, cheese, aioli and a signature spread.

Byron Bay Deli

Byron Bay Deli is a family-run gem on Lawson Street that doubles as a high-end specialty grocer. We often suggest this as our go-to gourmet destination for guests, particularly those looking for a late-afternoon bite, as they stay open until 5:00 PM.

While your order is being prepared, we recommend browsing the deli’s shelves for house-branded relishes, sea salt flakes, and artisanal pantry staples, making it as much a shopping destination as a lunch spot.

Try: The Italiano: prosciutto, fior di latte mozzarella, house-made pesto, sun-dried tomato, and rocket on a fresh baguette.

Byron Corner Store

If you want a genuine slice of village history, this is it. The Hand family has been running Byron Corner Store for over twenty years, and brothers Lachie and Reif have kept their "healthy takeaway" philosophy alive. They proudly pour Moonshine Coffee from the hinterland and keep the counter stocked with iconic Wardell Pies and their mother’s handmade lemon slice.

Try: The Pumpkin Turkish. It’s a local favorite, featuring roasted pumpkin, feta and fresh spinach, then pressed until the bread is perfectly crisp.

Happy Days

Tucked away in the Arts & Industry Estate, Happy Days is the neighborhood secret we share when guests want to see the creative side of Byron. It is a beautifully stripped-back space, centering around a signature maroon espresso machine and sun-drenched tile tables.

In our books, this is perhaps the most peaceful spot outside of the village to escape the bustle. And, most importantly, it’s home to what we consider some of the region’s finest house-made sourdough.

Try: The Salad Sandwich: Made on house sourdough, a sophisticated take on an Aussie classic, featuring kimchi mayo and parmesan cheese that elevates the fresh, pickled crunch.

Baloney’s Deli

Located on Shirley Street, Baloney’s is Byron’s answer to a New York-Italian deli. Founded by George McFarlane, the space is a nod to nostalgia with its black-and-white checkered tiles and retro fit-out. It puts a breezy local spin on Italian-American food culture, resulting in a focaccia that has become a town staple: pillowy, salt-flecked, and baked fresh every morning.

This is our favourite “grab and go” sandwich stop. While they pour your Supreme Coffee and stack your order, browse their deli shelves for imported Italian pantry staples, from specialty pastas to Fabio sodas.

Try: The ‘Mortadella Papi’: Mortadella, Stracciatella, Guindillas, and green olives served on fluffy focaccia. If you prefer a bit of heat, ask for the Spicy Gabita, which features eggplant and fermented chili

Bertie’s Ballina

The twenty-minute drive south to Ballina is worth it, especially if you’re visiting Bertie’s on Cherry Street. Run by husband-and-wife team Tim and Rhianne, this neighbourhood favourite is beloved for its sun-lit interiors and welcoming community-first charm. If you’ve made the trip to this sophisticated cafe-meets-winebar, stick around for a glass of minimal-intervention wine and soak in the slower riverside pace of Ballina.

Try: The ‘Ploughmans’: Smoked ham, English Cheddar, piccalilli, malt vinegar pickled onion, and butter.

If you’re looking for a specific flavour profile (or perhaps the best local spot for a post-sandwich dip) come have a chat with us at the front desk. We’re always ready with the latest insider tips to help you find your ideal stack. Happy hunting.
