The Art of Staying In (and Stepping Out)

If winter where you are means grey skies and long dark evenings, Byron might feel like a revelation. Crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and a slower rhythm that invites you to rest—or roam. That’s the beauty of winter here. You don’t have to choose between staying in or heading out. At Basq House, both feel equally good.

Soak in the winter sun, explore the coastline, or wander through Byron’s vibrant village—shopping, strolling, and sampling the best the area has to offer. Or, nestle in at Basq House. With our heated magnesium pool, two cozy fireplaces, and the serene sanctuary of our Library, every corner is designed for the perfect winter retreat (take a peek inside).

Not sure where to start? There’s no need for a rigid itinerary—just follow your mood. Here’s our guide to winter in Byron Bay.

Find Stillness Below Basq: Discover Navia Bathhouse

Downstairs from Basq, a new ritual begins. Navia is a Scandinavian-inspired bathhouse where the wellness culture of Byron meets quiet Nordic design.

Slip between the heat of the sauna and steam room, the cool rush of the plunge pool, and the deep calm of the magnesium hot pool. You can book a seasonal ritual—or just drop in for a restorative circuit. It’s beautifully simple, and the perfect way to warm up and unwind.

Spend a Morning at the Markets

Markets are part of Byron’s rhythm—and they’re especially beautiful in the cooler months. The morning air is crisp, the coffee hot, and the pastries always worth it.

Here are our favourites (for the full guide, read our Byron Markets blog):

  • Byron Farmers Market (Thursdays, 7–11am): Fresh produce, local eggs, flowers, and great coffee.
  • Bangalow Market (Fourth Sunday each month): Artisan wares and a hinterland backdrop.
  • Byron Community Market (First Sunday each month): A coastal classic for art, music, and makers.

Take the Lighthouse Walk

Brisk but beautiful, the walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse is uniquely breathtaking in the cooler months. Starting from Basq House, the walk is about 45 minutes each way—just enough to feel invigorating, without needing to rush.

You’ll pass rainforest, clifftops, and open ocean views. Keep an eye out for whales between May and October. And when the trail curves toward Wategos Beach, take the hint: pause in the sun, or run in for a quick (and very refreshing) dip.

Spot a Humpback Whale

From May to November every year, pods of Humpback Whales migrate along the coastline within the Cape Byron Marine Park (between Ballina and Byron Bay). With Out of The Blue Adventures, you’ll have the rare opportunity to encounter these creatures up close. Join a passionate marine biologist on a two-hour eco-friendly cruise, offering an unforgettable and intimate whale-watching experience.

Take the Scenic Route

Ready for a change of pace? Head inland. The Byron hinterland is made for day trips, with winding roads, winter light, and pockets of charm you’ll want to return to. If you don’t have wheels, just ask Reception about our Share Car—available for half- or full-day hire.

Our go-to winter stops:

  • Newrybar: Coffee at The Little General, and browsing at Newrybar Merchants—a collective of local makers and designers.
  • Federal: A hidden gem for lunch at Doma Café—Japanese flavours in the middle of the bush.
  • Bangalow: Boutique shopping and a relaxed café scene. Stop in at Woods for brunch.

Stretch the drive

Take the scenic route via Coolamon Scenic Drive—arguably one of the best roads in the region. You’ll pass panoramic views, rolling hills, and glimpses of the coast in the distance.

Add a detour

Killen Falls is just a 30-minute drive from Basq. A lush, quiet spot to sit by the water and feel the rainforest stillness set in

Try a New Trail

Winter is the ideal time to explore Byron by bike—and we make it easy. Guests can borrow Lekker bikes from Basq House on request during their stay.

For trail inspiration, start with our blog: Bike Paths in Byron.

Cruise towards the Arts & Industrial Estate for low-key galleries, bakeries and shops. Or take the scenic Byron to Bangalow Trail, a gentle ride through hinterland landscapes. No traffic, just trees and time.

Settle in with a Long Lunch

When the air turns cool, the long lunch reigns supreme. In winter, Byron is famous for sunshine without the sting, a gentle breeze, and fewer crowds. It’s the perfect season to seek out long lunches in scenic spots—hidden in the countryside or or positioned at a table by the sea, these are a few of our favourites:

  • Frida’s Field (Nashua): A long table set among the trees. Seasonal produce, open-air warmth, and country charm.
  • Pixie Food & Wine (Byron): Chic, central, and a favourite among locals and return guests.
  • Beach Byron Bay: For something scenic, this ocean-facing dining spot is perfect for a bright winter lunch.

Afternoons at Ease

As the day slows, Byron softens.

Pop into one of the nearby art spaces—Pack Gallery, Lone Goat, Thom Gallery or Jai Jai (right next door to Basq)—for small but considered exhibitions. Or head to Jonson Lane for some retail therapy. Nagnata, Deiji Studios, and Venroy are our go-tos for elevated basics and seasonal layers. Explore our local retail guide here

And if the couch is calling? Our Lounge and Library are made for this. Soft light, good books, a curated drinks list, and a quiet hum of conversation. You don’t need an agenda—just time.

Stay for Dinner (and a Nightcap)

Evenings in Byron are quiet but never dull. Basq House’s guests are just steps away from some of the best spots for wine, snacks, or a special dinner.

Some of our favourites (and even more to explore here):

If you’re staying in, Basq House offers just what you need—a curated drinks list available at Reception, a quiet Lounge to settle in, and the fireplace lit when the evening turns cool.

Back at Basq…

Whether you’re coming home from the hills or haven’t left the house all day, Basq makes the in-between moments feel just right.

Mornings begin with coffee and pastries, evenings close with a drink by the fire. The Library is filled with beautiful titles to read and spaces to retreat. Every room is a sanctuary—layered in comfort, considered in every detail.

Our temperature-controlled magnesium pool is open year-round. Start the day with a dip or end it with a float under the sky. The rooftop is also yours to embrace: soak in the sunshine, order a cheeseboard and enjoy the quiet above Byron’s village.
